Timmy High School in the Dominican Republic

June 11-19, 2019!

June 12, 2019

Today was our first full day in the Dominican Republic. As an introduction to the culture and 7e projects, we hiked Brison. On our hike, we got to learn about the communities, how they functioned and their needs. We also learned about how 7e works with the community members on collaborative projects in order to create sustainable change. The hike also allowed us to experience first-hand the effort put in by locals in order to do basic, daily activities, like go to school, go to work, or get groceries. Not only did we get to view the world through the eyes of the locals for the day, but we were also introduced to the seven elements of human security during our evening lecture where we learned that all aspects of life are interconnected and a holistic, collaborative approach is essential in order to create a meaningful impact.

Today we painted the inside and outside of a bottle house in Las Canas. The day started off with us sanding down the walls so that we could have a smooth surface for the paint. After that, we mixed the paint and began to cover the walls. We learned that we were the first group ever to get the opportunity to paint the walls of a house, because normally the locals don’t trust foreign groups to do that, so that was cool. What we came away with is that despite it appearing as a small action, it’s the little things that make a big impact. The family and their relatives pitched in with helping us with the job, and we were all able to bond with the kids. Even though painting may not seem important, it’s what makes the house a home for families.
